Aren’t They Just Another Room Spray?

Aren’t They Just Another Room Spray?

In 2013, the staff at our downtown retail shop had an idea.  They wanted to do our Sage candle as a spray.  We tested it out, and like a cheesy romcom, the reaction was seemingly serendipitous.  Our customers loved it and it flew off the shelves.  With that boost of confidence, we expanded the line to be 8 smudge sprays that we would go on to call Wicked Good Sprays.

I do the marketing with the owner of the company Jacki Smith.  As soon as I saw the sprays, I fell in love.  I also fell in love with the reactions our customers had when they bought and used the products.  I really wanted these sprays to go wholesale.   Jacki did as well, but as the boss, she had a bigger vision than my need to make it happen noooow.  She showed amazing patience as I channeled my impatient inner little kid asking “are we there yet, are we there yet?”

In 2015, I got my wish.  The smudge sprays were going to be introduced for wholesale production.  I was ecstatic, that is right ecstatic. (smudge spray nerd alert) I was incredibly happy that I was going to be able to market these sprays to the world! Why was I so excited?  Honestly, the Wicked Good Sprays called to me as it seemed like the perfect alternative to our candles. I also saw how much our customers in Ferndale liked it, I was eager to pass that onto to our stores.

When I started telling folks about the spray though I got one main reaction; apathy. “Oh you guys too huh?” or “yeah everyone is doing those” or “we already have tons of room sprays.” I knew room sprays were a “thing” now, I mean that is why our downtown shop started making them, customer request.  I think what has happened is what always happened, there is a trend, so companies quickly product something and there just isn’t that magic or passion behind it.

What I wanted to shout from the roof top is that these sprays were practically created by our customer feedback and the same recipes as our candles.  We have always been that company that focused what was inside the product before its beautiful packaging.  It is in our mission statement that we create products with spiritual integrity before we follow a trend.

My happy moment came when after sending the sprays to a few testing sights, one store reported back on the Easy Street spray. She said she really like the smell of the Ninja power and customers were really drawn to the Dragon’s Blood but the best part was her story about the easy street. “What I can tell you is that the Easy Street really works, we were having a really slow week and we were worried we wouldn’t make our numbers.  I sprayed the easy street around partly for its intent and partly to test out your product. Well, a half hour later we had one of our best days in a while so we will defiantly keep spraying it!”  This was one of those conversations that brought me back to my passion about the smudge sprays.  They worked!

As someone who works for the company, I know my opinion is a little bit bias and I know there are a lot of options and decisions to be made.  What I can really say about our sprays is that you’re getting a product with spiritual integrity, made by folks who really believe in the product. Give us a try, buy a couple and even just use them yourself or have your staff try them out to see how they work.  When you believe in the integrity of something, you will sell a whole bunch of it.  Your customers come to your store because they trust in you and believe in your message, and we are here to help you keep your message true.

Wicked Good Sprays Have Officially Launched -Video

Wicked Good Sprays Have Officially Launched -Video

Wicked Good Sprays Are Here!

The Wicked Good room sprays have officially launched for Coventry Wholesale!  When I asked Jacki how I should describe the sprays, she quickly said "it's our candle magic with out the spray" and that is exactly what it is.  We have been selling the sprays for over a year now locally in Ferndale Michigan and they have become a popular alternative to use in spell work, energy work, clearing energy out or bringing what you want into a space. It has been a HUGE hit with out Reiki instructors at the Candle Wick Shop, in particular the Smudge Spray, Rosemary and Sage.

I really pushed for the Wicked Good Sprays to be made available to the wholesale market because I saw how well they took off in our store downtown.  After a lot of hard work, and even reformulating a few times, the spray is ready.  We would like to thank all those who gave us valuable feedback to help make this a wonderfully high quality spray without sacrificing all the magic.

I had the Coventry staff who has used and sold the sprays the most this past year sit down and talk about their favorite Wicked Good Spray!

PRE ORDER the Wicked Good Room Sprays!

The Wicked Good Sprays started as a side project for Jacki Smith (she has a lot of those) for a local convocation that our little store participates annually.  Jacki created these room sprays as an alternative from her candles.  They started selling very well and soon people were contacting our downtown shop asking if we had anymore.  With popularity and their reputation for working very well growing, we expanded them to be available on our website.

We had to figure out the best way to take our small production methods and figure out if were ready for a larger scale sales.  After some work and field tests we are very happy to announce that August 2015 will be the Wicked Good Sprays official wholesale launch!

There are 8 sprays total.  You the sprays are available on the website right now as a pre order. The stories behind why we chose to expand the oils that we did!

The stories behind why we chose to expand the oils that we did!

Oil expansion for July

Another exciting thing happening in July is our oil expansion!  Starting July 1st, we will be expanding the oil lines. Blessed Herbal oils will now have Energy and Calming.  There will be Crown of Glory to the Motor City Hoodoo Oils. We also are happy to announce that we are adding the World line as oils.

Crown of Glory is one of our favorites and we are excited to bring it back! When taking the LSAT last summer I dropped a bit on my wrists to give me that extra energetic bump in confidence I needed to get me through that intense moment. Crown of Glory is great for moments like that, and now with the oil, you can carry it with you for all occasions!

Calming oil is actually the Inner Balance recipe for those looking to match it up to a Blessed Herbal candle.  I always pushed for this candle to be made an oil because frankly, I needed to help focus and calm myself from time to time.  Life in a small family business can be stressful and having that extra help of calming and letting me know what to prioritize and when to let things go.

Energy oil was added to the Blessed Herbal oils based on surveys we took from our customers last year.  When asked what people wanted more of in their life we got over and over again that people wanted more energy to fulfill the goals and standards they have set for themselves.  This was a universal need no matter what the package.  More energy to be a better mom, more energy to expand a business, more energy to be able to attempt work-life balance, more energy to take dogs on walks.  This conversation inspired our special edition power brokers line but also led us to the decision to put energy in a bottle to help people to keep doing the amazing things they are doing.

World Magic Oils is another customer request, but this time out wholesale customers!  We were getting many request for our World Magic line in oil form.  In particular for the Sacred White Sage oil. (which is always a best seller in any form) We decided to bring the whole line into oils. I was blown away how beautiful the oils were with the bright eye catching labels.  Our customers in out downtown shop Candle Wick Shop seemed to agree, they have been flying off the shelves!

When Work Follows You On Vacation

When Work Follows You On Vacation

As I work on this blog, I am supposed to be on vacation.  As my work days leading up to my vacation came and past more and more rapidly, I found my work days entering the time space continuum where I would blink and it was the end of the day.  All this is my roundabout way of saying I didn’t get all my work done before I clocked out on Thursday evening, hours away from this massive tour of the east coast of the USA my husband and I had planned. With the same seriousness and good intentions of a years resolution, I resolved that I would simply finish my work while I was one vacation.

What has this done?  Well I am exhausted, while folks are napping between various tourist destinations I am clicking away desperately trying to maintain focus, behind in my due dates, making compromises on the things I wanted to accomplish.  This is all a result of guilt I have built up for myself for leaving on vacation in the first place.  My fatal flaw is that I want to do everything myself, not  asking for assistance, and feeling guilty for taking time off.  I thank many people start to blur the line between your time spent at work and the personal time you have.  For me, work sticks to my fingers like gum, I feel more responsibility to it than to my personal life.

Do you ever notice how many people get in terrible fights on vacation?  Its tragic.Vacations turn into a focus of stress and hard times rather than the rejuvenating effect they are meant to be.  We bring our addictions with us(for me its my work), our hurt feelings, our bitterness, our need to prove we are right, to make everything perfect, to control everything.

While I am here, giving in to my work addiction and my loyalty to my job over my family, I know that as soon as this laptop is closed, I need remove this baggage from me if I am going to enjoy my time.  This is not only important for me, but for the work I love so much.  I need to take this time to recharge my batteries so I can more productive when I get back, allow for new ideas to enter my mind and just be a happier worker.  I brought this baggage with me, but I am throwing it in the ocean.

What I am going to do is make a list of everything I feel like I “should” be doing for work right now. I am going to go through all of them one by one and write down how each task is being handled in my absence.  Once I get that all off my chest, I am going to tear it up and burn the little pieces while affirming to myself that the world is going on without me.  I then am going to burn(safely) all the little pieces and dispose of them far away from me.

If you are on planning a trip this summer, I would suggest doing this before you leave. It may not be work, it could be past fights with your partner, anxiety about not being in control, anything really.  Try visualizing these things and be aware of them.  It can be tiring at first but with practice, you’ll find yourself letting go of these little pangs inside of you.  You can also try to burn a spiritual cleansing candle or even a happy home  or happiness candle before you leave.  You could even dab a little of the happiness oil in the space where you are traveling.  Expel out those bad feelings and and bring in calmness and enjoy your well deserved vacation!

Special note: if you are like me and overly committed to your work, check out Project: time off for some statistics on how important taking some time away. http://www.projecttimeoff.com/

Traveling Safely and Happily

Traveling Safely and Happily

It’s summer!!  For many (sadly not all of us) will be heading somewhere whether it be a long far away destination or a long weekend with friends in a nearby camp ground.  Travelling can take a lot out of your physically and emotionally.  I have never been so relaxed and exhausted at the same time while travelling. According to the US travel Association (ustravel.org) we are now travelling more without our children and 79% of us will be going by car.  The average leisure traveler will be older, 55% of travelers are over 45 years old.  We are also changing the way we are planning our trips.

“Trip planning sources have shifted over the last several years, with social media and mobile devices being used more often. In 2012, nearly one-quarter (23%) of domestic leisure travelers relied on friends and relatives to plan their trips, while three in ten (31%) utilized their own past experiences. One in ten used destination websites, nine percent used traveler provider websites (airline, hotel, rental car, cruise, tours, etc.), five percent used social networking and four percent used a mobile device to help plan their trip. (Compared to 2009, only two percent used social networking sources and one percent used their mobile device to assist in trip planning. Direct experiences and destination websites were relied on slightly more in 2009 than in 2012.)” --US Travel

We are also way more connected on our trips than ever before.  Devices, devices, devices!  It is more difficult than ever before to disconnect from your life and just relax on your vacation.  My phone tells me about my emails, kids are buried into snapchat or video games.  Everyone has earbuds in and suddenly you are living your vacation in your tablet or phone.

What are some things you would suggest to others to keep their calm in those busy roads, keep your children connected to their space?  Are there any secrets or tips to make a vacation fun, safe and happy?  Comment on Facebook or our twitter.

Sanity Savers for Parents

Sanity Savers for Parents

Sanity Savers for Parents

By Patty Shaw

There are quite a few tricks available that will ensure mommy (and daddy)  time is held sacred by the family, that are quite good for the family and you won’t feel guilty about doing them.

We’ll talk about using my three favorites, Bach Flower Remedies in spray bottles, creating a Sacred Space at home and Homeopathy in your first aid kit.

Bach Flower essences are fantastic ways to support behavior shifts in your children that are noninvasive, loving and nonjudgmental.  Make up a spray bottle for each of the remedies your family seems to need and keep them handy.  Place 5 drops of Bach flower essence into a spray bottle of distilled water and spray the room liberally when needed.

Chicory is for children who are bickering or fighting over toys or for your little one who is constantly demanding attention and clingy.

Spray a little Hornbeam around for the child who can’t seem to get motivated in the morning because the idea of going to school just exhausts them.

Holly is for sibling rivalry and jealousy.

Impatiens is for your overactive child who can’t seem to sit still. This remedy will help to slow junior down and get into bed and fall asleep.  I also use reiki to ground and calm children to get them to fall asleep.

Children who are bossy or a bully will chill and be more respectful and less harsh of others with a few drops of Vine Remedy in their juice box.

Elm is for mom.  A few drops of elm in you water will help you come back down to earth when the responsibility of being a working mom overwhelms you.  You can get back into the day to day and let go of the focusing on the big picture to much.

Wild Oat is for your teenager who is picking a direction in life and can’t seem to decide or is at a cross road.  Give wild oat to your teenager when the prospect of making a life choice is to daunting.

Separation anxiety? Aspen (the quaking tree) helps your child settle down after a bad dream, and creates inner peace, security and fearlessness.  Aspen helps them access their own courage and confidence.

Setting up sacred spaces at home promotes a scream free zone and uninterrupted mommy or daddy time.  We all need peace and quiet, but when the kids or partners are feeling that loss because you need some time to yourself, this daily practice will really help every member of the family feel love and supported while you are not available.

The cone of divine silence:  In the morning before the day starts, visualize your home in a beam of light shining down on your home from above and up from below.  Invite the guardian angel of each member of the family to ground and center each of their people and walk with them.  Invite Archangel Michael to protect the home and every member of the family from negative energy and release all attachments on you and your children that have accumulated throughout the day as you all walk through the door at the end of your day.  Ask the angels help your sacred space become a sanctuary for your family by clearing your home of any residual unhappy feelings left over from previous days and filling it with unconditional love.  Renew this sacred space every morning before you get out of bed. You can support this loving energy by placing rose quarts around your home.

A list of Must have Homeopathic remedies for your first aid kit. Homeopathy is very easy to administer to your children because it has a gentle almost sweet taste.  No screwed up faces and fighting this remedy.  Remember to keep this and all medicine out of the reach of children.  You can find homeopathic remedies at the health food store.  You can get yourself a book or follow the suggestions on the label.  Boiron is a popular brand and has made putting homeopathy in your first aid kit extremely easy.  Here is a short list of what I keep available at my home.

Arnica Montana for bruises and goose eggs from a bad bump

Podophyllum 30 c for diarrhea or Veratrum Album

Ruta Gaviolis is for a pulled tendons, twisted ankles - sport injuries It’s a soft tissue remedy

Chamomile for the ear ache that keeps the baby up all night when one cheek is hot and the other cold

Belladonna 30c for the ear aches with fever and a screaming baby

Aconite is for anxiety induced asthma

PMS? – Nat Mur 30 c calms sugar and salt cravings and irritability

Sepia for depression from overwork, most moms’ need sepia by the way.

Ipecac 30c for vomiting that won’t stop – dry heaves

There is a lot more information in my book, the Healers Almanac, Journey into Health with Wisdom from the 21st Century Goddesses that will help you create and maintain a happy and balanced home life.  I invite you to check it out and purchase one for your home library. Available through www.coventrycreations.com and www.amazon.com.

How to De-stress your House and Expel Other Negative Energies

How to De-stress your House and Expel Other Negative Energies

We have been talking about ways to expel negative energies from your house with Jacki Smith and Patty Shaw, Owners of Coventry Creations. In the last blog post, we talked about some causes of negative energy build up in your household.  In this blog post, they discuss what are some simple ways to clear it all away. These are simple and easy ways to cleanse different types of energy from your home.  Some you many know about or have even forgotten about but it’s great to have a nice refresher!

Clearing Away Anger:

Walk through the house with buckets of cool, clear and clean water (all three, very important). It picks up a lot of emotions.  Then dump the buckets of water off your property. Afterward, light s peaceful, tranquil candle. “With ever you clear, you have to refill”

Clear Away Tiredness:

Open a window and make sure to sweep the old energy out of the window with a feather duster or baking pan, then wash the pan. Afterward, light an uncrossing candle with a fire(energy candle)

Clear Away Depression: Light a grief candle then a happiness candles.  Afterward, drum on something make it a happy beat.  This will fill your home with happiness and pleasure.

Clear Away Confusion: Use a pair of scissors and make a clipping motion in the air around you to cut the attachments of energy that are pulling you in too many different directions.

Clear Away Ghosts: Burn a sage candle to raise the vibration and tell them you leave your house now. Visualize a beam of white light filling your house and property. Ask Archangel Michael to help these lost souls find a way to the other side.

Too Much Electricity: Place smokey quartz or obsidian around your house and around your computer, TV and the clock radio near your bed. Burn a stability candle to ground extra energy in your aura into the earth.

How to Keep a Tranquil Home

How to Keep a Tranquil Home

I sat down with Patty Shaw and Jacki Smith, owners of Coventry Creations and talked about cleansing up negative energies for the summer. We talked about what are some typical causes of stress in the home and how to tell when it is affecting people's lives, energies and relationships.

Q: What energetically are frequent causes for a stressful home.

Jacki: A big cause is simply bringing energy home with you.  You are at work or school and someone’s else’s bad day seeps into your aura.  Our you could have had a rough day and you unconsciously start to “share the pain”  with your house on everybody living in it.

Patty:  There are also ghosts, power lines that are nearby, too much electricity running through your house.  You have got to unplug sometimes.

Jacki: There are al to of unspoken emotions, and OVER abundance of emotions.

Patty: Grudges too.  You know that energy of people you are going to have a fight...it just hasn’t happened yet or a lot of unspoken bad feelings. It could even be an unclean house or a giant to do list.

Q: Is is difficult for people to pick up that there is this heavy energy in the house?

Patty: Yes! Many times you feel irritated but can’t put your finger on it.

Jacki: I think it is a blind spot, we become so used to it. It’s like the smell of the cat’s litter box,, the scent is there, but you no longer notice it.

Patty: It also makes you sleepy or wanna tune out.  Just sit around and watch TV.

Q: What are the warning signs?

Patty: You avoid going home

Jacki: You want to just mindlessly sleep

Patty: Or you can’t sleep at all.

Jacki: ...well you want to sleep instantly but you just can’t

Patty: You may pick fights or even drink more than usual.

Jacki: Any sort of of escapism

Patty: Your kids also act up, everyone’s on edge.

How do you start to fix this?

Jacki:  Try to break down what you are feeling inside the house?  Is it anxiety? Is it anger? Are your depressed or is there is something extra that is polluting your space.

Patty.  I think start with clearing away the negative energy from electronics.  We have surrounded ourselves with all kinds of electronics that are wonderful in many ways, but they can clog you all up.

Jacki: You know what is overwhelming you really.  Always feeling angry or wasting the day away on the couch.  You know what it is that you want to change.  So take on that problem.

Next week we will talk about some simple and easy ways to cleanse different types of energy from your home. Some you many know about or have even forgotten about but it’s great to have a nice refresher!

Hoo Doo How to: Coffin Nails

Hoo Doo How to: Coffin Nails

COFFIN NAILS

While coffin nails used to be plentiful and easy to come by, such is not the case anymore.  Of course, there are still many occult supply stores that offer them for sale, but the problem with obtaining those is clear:  There’s no way to know whether the nails you’ve bought are truly the real thing, or just regular nails that can be purchased at half the cost from any local hardware store.  This problem can be avoided, however, if you simply make your own.  And all it takes is a package of nails, some graveyard dirt, a zippered plastic bag, and the instructions below.

  • Count out the number of nails you’ll need for the spell in question and charge them with your desire.

  • Place the nails in the plastic bag and sprinkle them well with graveyard dirt appropriate to your desire.  [A few tablespoons will do it.]

  • If the spell calls for rusty nails, sprinkle well with water.

  • Seal the bag, allow the nails to rest in the dirt overnight, and they’ll be ready for use the next day.  [NOTE:  Do not wipe the nails clean before use.]

* * *

While we’re on the subject of nails, you should probably know that those gathered them from particular sites can definitely add power to your magic.  For your convenience, a few collection sites along with their uses follow below:

  • Court House: To bring justice or to cause the target to lose his or her legal battle

  • Hospital:  To cause illness

  • Jail:  To bring jail or prison time

  • Mental Institution:  To cause insanity

  • Police Station:  To bring about an arrest

  • Workplace:  To cause trouble for a co-worker or employer

Louisiana Conjure: Faith, Remedies and Roots

by Denise Alvarado

Denise Alvarado  is a New Orleans-born, native Creole raised in the rich culture of New Orleans, Louisiana. She has studied indigenous healing traditions from a personal, professional and academic perspective for over four decades. She is the author of numerous books about southern conjure, including the The Conjurer's Guide to St. Expedite, The Voodoo Hoodoo Spellbook, the Hoodoo Almanacs, Workin' in da Boneyard, Hoodoo and Conjure New Orleans, Crossroads Mamas 2015 Spiritual Baths for Every Occasion, the Voodoo Doll Spellbook, Voodoo Dolls in Magick and Ritual and more. Her provocative artwork has been featured on several
television shows including National Geographic's Taboo, The Originals, and Blue Bloods, as well as in several books by other authors. She is a rootworker in the Louisiana Hoodoo tradition, a spiritual artist, and teacher of southern conjure at Crossroads University, www.crossroadsuniversity.com. Visit her websites: http://www.creolemoon.com and www.voodoomuse.org for a little sweet tea and conjure.

In the olden days, it was commonplace for women to have a variety of animal, mineral and botanical elements within reach so as to be able to tend to any number of conditions presented. Women were the primary healers in the family; as the kitchen was their domain, so was the doctoring. Of course, there were also men who worked roots, but learning about the healing properties of herbs and roots were just part of women’s work in the home.

The materia medica of the typical household would have consisted of animal substances such as fat, milk, bones, bugs and excrement (I know, yuck, but such was the case). Mineral and chemical substances included vinegar, bluestone, sulphur, Vaseline, camphor, turpentine, Epsom salts, baking soda, gasoline, ammonia, snuff, coal oil and kerosene. Most had gardens or knew the local flora and fauna well enough to have a variety of natural medicines on hand for rootdoctoring. All of these things were used to make ointments, compresses, poultices, decoctions, teas, baths, infusions, tonics, liniments and conjury. You wouldn’t hear Mama say she was conjuring anything; usually, she was just “fixin’” something.

While many families had someone who was knowledgeable of folk remedies and cures and even conjure – that being the realm of the supernatural – there are actually three categories of healers in Louisiana: the reméde man or woman, the traiteur, and the rootworker (also known as rootdoctor, hoodoo or gris gris man or woman). The reméde man treats natural physical ailments with plants, medicine from the drugstore and domestic remedies. The traiteur heals natural and spiritual conditions with prayer, laying of hands and charms. They claim to have God-given powers that allow them to heal through faith. The rootworker or hoodoo cures and creates unnatural diseases and conditions through spells, gris gris, and a variety of charms and tricks.

True to the very essence of hoodoo and rootwork, if an ingredient was needed that wasn’t on hand, a substitution was made in all of the above cases. Many family recipes served multiple purposes and for the most part the goal was the alleviation of symptoms as opposed to a cure; although, a cure at any time is always a welcomed event.

Often there is prayer involved in serious cases. Faith combined with the spirit of the medicine served and continues to serve to heal many people who could not afford a conventional doctor.

Curin’ takes on several forms, including poultices, compresses, tinctures and infusions. Most commonly a poultice is used to apply an external herbal cure. In general, a homemade poultice is made by mashing herbs and other ingredients with warm water or natural oils to make a paste. The paste is then applied directly to the skin and covered with a piece of clean cloth. A compress is made similarly except the raw, prepared materials are applied to a cloth which is then applied to the affected area. Tinctures and infusions were often applied as compresses. Poultices and compresses are reapplied every 3 to 4 hours or when the material had dried out.

To make a slippery elm and thyme poultice for the treatment of boils, for example, grind up fresh thyme leaves using a mortar and pestle, then cover with boiling water. Pour off the excess liquid and add powdered slippery elm bark. It should be the consistency of a paste. Apply directly to the boil and cover with gauze. Keep it covered for several hours.

Another common form of medicine is the liniment. They are simple to make, keep well and offer instant relief for pain, inflamed muscles, circulation problems, arthritis, bruises and sprains. They can also be used as antiseptics depending on the botanicals used. They can be created to provide warming or cooling. Herbs and spices like cayenne pepper, black pepper and ginger can be added to stimulate blood circulation and assist with arthritis, pain, stiffness, and conditions aggravated by exertion or cold weather. Cooling ingredients such as peppermint or menthol crystals are ideal for inflammation and swelling, and areas that are “hot” due to sprains, bruises, and other injuries.

Liniments are made in a base of alcohol, witch hazel, or oil. The base functions as a carrier for the other herbal ingredients to effectively penetrate into the affected area and provide relief.

For example, an old folk liniment to treat a chest cold consists of a concoction of turpentine, oil of cedar, camphor, and Vaseline which is then smeared on the chest area. To treat rheumatism, a preparation can be made from Pokeberry root (Phytolacca americana) mixed with sweet almond oil, mineral oil or lard.

Here are some more examples of old time remedies for a number of conditions.

COLDS

Internal Remedies

  • A tea of magnolia, sassafras and citronella.

  • An infusion of elderberry flowers.

  • The bark of a peach tree boiled down and turned to the East.

  • A syrup made of honey, soda, olive oil and the crushed grains of coral tree.

  • A tonic called Whiskey Camfré, which consists of whiskey poured over crushed camphor and bottled to be taken a spoonful at a time.

External Remedies

  • An ointment made from sheep’s tallow, turpentine and olive oil.

  • A rubdown with Whiskey Camfré.

MINOR CUTS, SORES AND ABRASIONS

  • A poultice of hot milk.

  • A poultice of brown sugar and soap.

  • A poultice of sugar and corn husks.

  • A poultice of snuff and honey (also good for bee stings).

  • A poultice of bread and milk.

INSECT BITES AND BEE STINGS

  • Chew a plantain leaf and don’t swallow it. Spit it out and put on the insect bite and cover with gauze or a Band-Aid.

  • Clean mud applied directly to a bite. Does not have to be covered.

  • A sliced raw onion held directly on a bite or sting is said to bring quick relief.

SORE THROAT

  • Gargle with a decoction made from the roots of the blackberry bush.

  • Gargle with a decoction made from persimmon tree blossoms.

  • Rub the neck with Whiskey Camfré.

  • Drink an infusion of boiled flies or chicken gizzards.

BLEEDING

  • A handful of spider webs placed on the affected area will stop bleeding. Check out this article for an interesting read about this: A Mess of Cobwebs Makes a Believer out of Doc Miller.

  • Wear a key on a string around the neck to stop nosebleeds.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

  • A tea made from yellow root (goldenseal).

  • Eat 2 cloves of garlic daily.

  • A tea made from 2-3 bay leaves (also relieves migraines).

In addition to the use of household items and plants in curing, there are superstitions and old wives tales associated with certain practices. Magic formulas, protective amulets, faith healing, and prayer are used in Louisiana folk medicine, as well as conjure, and often the lines between the two are blurred. For example:

  • Wearing a strand of amber beads will stop a toothache.

  • Making the sign of the cross with a black cat’s tail over a sty will make the sty disappear.

  • Two matches crossed on a person’s head will make a headache go away.

  • A red string tied around the little finger will stop a nosebleed.

  • A toad placed on the head will transfer a headache to the toad. When the toad dies, the headache will disappear.

  • Lie on a bed of cool willow leaves to get rid of a fever. Once the leaves are warm, it is said the fever has been transferred into the leaves and they must be discarded.

  • To cure a burn, pass your hand over the burn and say nine times, “When Jacquot was crossing the sea someone told him: it kills fire, it kills frost, in the name of the Father and Son and Holy Ghost.”

In the past, as in the present, protective amulets are numerous and consist of plants and animals. Some of the items used as amulets include:

  • Alligator teeth

  • Rattlesnake rattles

  • Pecan nuts

  • Coins

  • Hog teeth

  • A red flannel bag containing sulfur or Asafoetida

FORMULA FOR PINE PITCH OINTMENT

Pine pitch is a very effective folk remedy with numerous uses. It helps to dislodge splinters and bring boils to a head. It is good for rheumatism due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It can be used as an external treatment for burns and sores. It can be used as a glue, sealant and as fuel. The uses for pine pitch are endless, really.

To make pine pitch ointment, gather some pine sap. Fill up a mason jar about 1/3 full. The softest sap goes on the bottom and break up the harder pieces to the smallest size possible. Don’t use your mortar and pestle for this unless you have one you use only for pine resin as it is incredibly sticky.

Fill the jar with olive oil and give the jar a little shake to mix it up. Set the jar in a pan of water or a double boiler and heat on low heat until the pitch is dissolved. Carefully stir the pine oil.

Next add the beeswax and stir. The ratio for making the ointment is one part pitch to 2 parts oil and beeswax. When all is melted, pour into smaller containers and allow it to harden. Voila! You should have enough pine pitch salve to last a very long time.

Here are some folk remedies using pine pitch:

  • To prevent infection of wounds, get tallow (preferably mutton tallow), mix it with pine pitch, and apply. The pitch has antiseptic powers.

  • For colds, inhale several times a day the smoke from a shovel of red hot colds, covered by one layer of lightwood splinters from pitchy pine stumps, one layer of rags to hold in flames and keep the fire smoldering, a light sprinkling of tar and of turpentine distilled from pinewood of first two layers.

  • Pine pitch and bear’s fat applied to running sores (Cherokee remedy).

Detroit Hoodoo Month: A Conjure With No Name

Detroit Hoodoo Month: A Conjure With No Name

A Conjure with No Name

By Byron Ballard

Words are important. Language is important.  How we use it, how it morphs depending on the situation and the company, how it can be used as both balm and bomb—this is endlessly fascinating to those of us who are self-described word nerds.

In modern Western Pagan communities, we relentlessly parse our language in an attempt to be clear and to make our definitions stick. There are words that evolve over time—like the word “gay”—and there are other words that are deliberately and consciously re-defined in an act of reclamation, like the word “witch”.

This dedication is undergirded by a harsh reality: many experiences simply can’t be described in words. They needs smells, and touches. They require an experiential understanding that can only be kenned by the doing of a thing.

When it comes to what I do, the sort of practical magic I both teach and perform, it doesn’t have a name, not really. At some point, I will have enough time to research who tacked “Appalachian Granny Magic” onto this old weird cultural practice but until then I call it “Hillfolks’ Hoodoo”when I’m teaching.  It morphs into “Appalachian folk magic and healing modalities” when my audience is academic.

It comes from three major sources—British, German and Cherokee—and is a living tradition that is changing all the time. The people who brought it into my little corner of the world were staunchly Protestant Christian, and still are.  They don’t call it “magic” at all and are offended when anyone suggests that it is anything but the shaped power of God. It is standard operating procedure to always disavow any personal ability but to insist that the healer is an agent of the Divine, a channel through whom the Will and Love of Jesus is made manifest in some of the poorest of God’s children in the southern Appalachians.

The practitioners have often been older, experienced women and they have been called “granny women” and herb or yarb doctors. One of the earliest mentions I’ve found is from The Southern Highlander and His Homeland by John C. Campbell. Campbell was one of the flock of “song catchers” that arrived in the southern highlands at the beginning of the last century and there is a wonderful school named after him, where you can learn all sorts of beautiful and needful skills. (https://www.folkschool.org/)

Here’s what Campbell had to say:

There is something magnificent in many of the older women with their stern theology -- part mysticism, part fatalism -- and their deepunderstanding of life. ..."Granny" -- and one may be a grandmother young in the mountains -- if she has survived the labor and tribulation of her younger days, has gained a freedom and a place of irresponsible authority in the home hardly rivaled by the men of the family. ...Though superstitious she has a fund of common sense, and she is a shrewd judge of character. Insickness she is the first to be consulted, for she is generally somethingof an herb doctor, and her advice is sought by the young people of half the countryside in all things from a love affair to putting a new web inthe loom. (John C. Campbell, The Southern Highlander and his Homeland, Russell Sage foundation, 1921, pg. 140.https://archive.org/details/southernhighland00camp)

It is a stern theology, to be sure.  They are joyous at funerals because the beloved one has gone home to Jesus. They take trauma and tragedy in stride. They are tickled by the simplest things and count their blessings when they may. But they didn’t call what they did magic, and they still don’t. Their religion precludes that. They did and do sometimes call the people who have these gifts “witches” but even that is getting rarer as the religions get more strict.

Though I share much of the cultural trappings of the southern highlands, I certainly don’t share the religious sensibilities.  I was raised unchurched, from Methodist stock, and formally became a practicing Pagan in the 70s. I do call it magic and call myself a witch because the restrictions of that Protestant dogma don’t apply to my tree-hugging dirt worship.

And this thing I do, it doesn’t really have a name.  Back in the day, the neighbors in a cove would know who to go to for doctoring, for water-finding, for midwifery.  They were practicing old techniques that didn’t require the sick person to get to a doctor, even if one was nearby. What I continue to learn, even as I practice it, is rural peasant healing, social engineering and justice work.

Appalachian folk magic—like all folk magic systems—is based on using available materials to achieve the desired end result. In this formerly-isolated culture, there is a general suspicion of outsiders, of the Law.  From catching babies, to distributing justice, to burying the dead these old systems serve poor people, people without recourse to urban centers of either healing or the law.

I call it hillfolks’ hoodoo because that suits me. I may sometimes call it conjure or rootwork when I am talking to other practitioners. The folks that still practice it in the remote fastnesses of these old mountains, though, don’t call it anything at all.
